I know this book is part of a series, but I love that it can be read as a stand-alone romance story. I definitely saw some parts (especially at the start) where I was like “ah, this must link in to a past book” but it was never something that took away from my understanding of the book itself! Because it is a sports romance, the thing that makes it a series is the fact that it follows different team players. That makes it kind of fun to guess who the rest of the books in the series might be about.
I like that the plot to this story was very straightforward and easy follow along with, because it made it a good book to read between reads or if you’re just looking for something lighthearted and quick. But it definitely wasn’t a complex book and there was no real heavy background stories to each character—which isn’t ideal if you’re looking for an in-depth story. It felt kind of surface level and there was a lot more show than tell going on in some parts.
I must admit—given those points on lack of character depth and background—it did take me a while to figure out if I liked the main characters or not, because I couldn’t really relate to them. Or their decisions 😂 They felt a little flat in that sense, but they were slightly more rounded towards the end. And even if I didn’t learn anything by reading this book, it was kind of funny.
Aside from all that, I’m kind of starting to enjoy sports romances more! I can see why it’s such a popular (trope? genre?) type of romance! While I didn’t understand most of the hockey references, which showed up kind of often—I’m not sporty, okay 😂—it was still amusing. I find that sports team players almost always make for fun fill-in characters with great banter!
